In the first regatta of the year, Dark Star showed mid-season form the result of a concerted effort in the off-season to prepare both the boat and the crew with lots of practice. Led by Dave Ullman on tactics at one end and Farr 40 World Champion bowman Curtis Florence at the other, Dark Star showed consistent speed and excellent boat handling in the unexpectedly good breezy conditions that prevailed all weekend. Piranha won the opening race of the regatta, but suffered a broken jib halyard right at the start of race #2 from which they were fortunate to recover to fourth after trailing at the first weather mark by 20 boat lengths. Meanwhile Dark Star went on to win the race easily as the fleet got a taste of heavy jibs with Temptress taking second in a close battle with Skian Dhu. In race #3, Skian Dhu put the pressure on Dark Star as the breeze moderated back into the low teens and Piranha again had to recover to third, this time from a late right shift that again left them last at the first mark for the second race in a row.

Sunday was a different ball game with a forecast of big wind and a spot of rain that greeted the boats on the way to the race course. With Dark Star clear by four points, Piranha and Skian Dhu were tied for second on twelve points. Race four immediately developed into a battle between Dark Star and Piranha who exchanged tacks all the way up the weather leg and rounded nose to tail with Dark Star in the lead. The decisive moment in the race came approaching the leeward mark with Piranha claiming an inside overlap and Dark Star saying no. Rather than take the risk, Piranha swung down hard and back up again to avoid Dark Star’s transom. From there the boats never were apart more than two lengths on any cross for the entire second half of the race. Dark Star won the battle and their third race in a row effectively ending the regatta. Race five saw Skian Dhu get a great start and a nice early left shift and velocity in the building breeze (now touching 19 knots) to sail to the final victory of the regatta. Piranha took Dark Star, but it was too little too late.

As a side note, the boats had Kattack transponders onboard, so it is possible to see a replay of the races showing the boats on the race course and their speeds throughout the race. Long Beach YC has posted the five races with Kattack at http://www.kattack.com/ECommerce/FlashRacePlayer/tabid/238/Default.aspx
