LONG BEACH, CA (June 24, 2012) – Over three days of racing at the annual regional favorite regatta, Long Beach Race Week, Jeff Janov’s Dark Star of Cal Yacht Club dominated the ever competitive Southern California Farr 40 fleet, finishing first in six out of seven races. Long Beach Race Week, co-hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club and Alamitos Bay Yacht Club included over 150 participants in 15 difference classes, including seven in the Farr 40 class. The event also served as the Farr 40 West Coast Championship event.

Long Beach’s reputation for good sailing conditions did not disappoint with winds in the 12-17 knot range on all three days, with some 19 knot gusts seen on Saturday which made for gutsy on the water competition. After winning race one on Friday and then being challenged closely by Jeff Shew and Bill Durant’s Viva La Vida in race two, Janov’s Dark Star carried five first place finishes into Sunday, day three. Long Beach favorite Ray Godwin’s Temptress prevented a Dark Star sweep by finishing first in race six on Sunday. Godwin, whose Temptress finished third overall behind Viva La Vida said, “We had a good start—there had been some pretty bad ones—but the crew was great, and we had a good tactician in Dave Millett”.

Janov, the humble skipper from Marina Del Rey was almost happy to surrender the glare of a sweep with the lone loss to Godwin’s Temptress”. They sailed really well,” Janov said of his Long Beach rival. “This fleet is really tough. Anytime you do well it’s very rewarding.”

Janov’s crew was from an elite list of area veterans of both genders, including Dave Ullman, his title sponsor tactician, and Doug McLean, bow; Travis Wilson, mast; Michael Bradley, pit; Kelly Buchan, mid-bow; Kaytlin Hall, floater; Andrew Estcourt, spinnaker trimmer; Yumio Dornburg, jib trimmer, and Randy Smith, main sail.

“It was a very nice weekend,” Janov said. “The crew work was spectacular, and they like the conditions.”

Dark Star’s first place finish was followed by Shew/Durant’s Viva La Vida which sailed a solid regatta with three second and four third place finishes. Godwin’s Temptress took third place by tie breaker over the ever competitive Jo Ann skippered by Steve Murphy. Fleet newcomers David Michaelis’ Mako, Gordon Leon’s Foil and veteran Zoltan Katinszky’s White Night scrapped to overall finishes separated only by two points.
