Once again it was proven – practice makes perfect.  Team Far Niente, led by owner/driver Frederic Scheer went all out in preparing for North Americans including a week straight of training – even renting a house for the team to live in together while practicing.  Following on a solid second at NA’s Far Niente showed the benefit of the hard work and preparation with consistently good speed, smarts and handling to easily win Cal Race Week at Frederic’s home club CalYC.  It was a very popular win with the fleet who gave the team the best win – one earned with the respect and admiration of their competitors!

Behind Far Niente, Temptress won the last race to put themselves in a three way tie for second which they won by owning the only bullet of the three with Dark Star and Piranha ending third and fourth after the fourth tie breaker.

Interestingly, Far Niente becomes the fifth boat in five years to win Cal Race Week.  No boat has managed to repeat as winner of the event since the fleet started sailing it in 2007.  2007/Piranha, 2008/Temptress, 2009/Skian Dhu, 2010/Chayah.  And now a new name to add to the perpetual!  2011 Winner – Far Niente!

A VIEW FROM JOANN

California Yacht Club Race Week

Driver to Tactician: “Are you sure it is the short course?”

Tactician to Driver: “Yes.”

Driver to Tactician: “Are you sure it is the yellow mark?”

Tactician to Driver: “Yes.”

Driver to Tactician: “Why are all the other Farr 40s going to the orange mark?”

Tactician to Driver: “Don’t know.”

Driver to Rail: “Anyone on the rail see which color went up?”

Pit to Driver: “I concur with Tactician, YELLOW.”

Driver: “Then why is everyone else going to the orange mark?”

Tactician to Higher Authority: “Oh Please…. Oh Please…. Oh Please….………….YES!! YES!! YES!!”

JoAnn was first around the weather mark.  However, by first rounding at the leeward gate, Temptress took the lead and with every leg increased their lead to take a first in Race 5.

At the finish, JoAnn was on port with Dark Star gybing over onto starboard fighting for a second place finish.  All hands on JoAnn were ready for a last minute gybe at the finish pin, however, they were clear ahead and were able to get their very best finish in a Farr 40 high points race to date, second place for Race 5 of 2011 Cal Race Week.
