Cabrillo Yacht Club was happy to supply their usual great sailing conditions for the September Farr 40 Regatta. Saturday morning was clear and hot at the docks with little or no breeze. By race time, we had 18-20 kts. Just a typical Hurricane Gulch summer day. The stiff breeze led to some exciting racing and a few equipment problems.

The race course was just off the LA breakwater. The afternoon westerly accelerates as it rounds Point Fermin resulting in an 18-25kt breeze most afternoons during the summer. Saturday, there was a distinct current line in the middle of the course marked by foam where the two currents met. This favored the right side of the course and lifted the boats when approaching the windward mark. Jeff Janov’s Dark Star took advantage of this and sailed a flawless day with Viva and Temptress hot on their heels. Mick Schlens in Far Niente led the third race until he spun out just prior to the finish line allowing Dark Star to get past. The rest of the fleet was plagued with equipment problems. Steve Murphy had a strong lead in the third race and had to retire due to a broken mainsail halyard just after turning the leeward gate. Skain Dhu ripped their main and Foil wrapped the kite so badly that they had to sail off toward Newport Beach so Sammy Herrin could go up the mast and free the sail. Almost all the boats rounded up at some point during the day. Like I said, a typical summer day in Hurricane Gulch!

The breeze on Sunday was a little less with only 16-18 knots. Everyone was prepared and the racing was very close. Mick Schlens took advantage of home turf and got a first and second, putting Far Niente into 2nd place overall. A special thanks to the CBYC race committee with Mark Townsend as PRO. The race committee work was superb. Congratulations to Jeff Janov and Dark Star for a well sailed 1st place in the Cabrillo Beach Farr 40 Invitational.
