Congratulations to Viva La Vida who took first place by a tiebreaker.  Viva La Vida and Dark Star were battling each other both days to a tie with 10 points each.

Cal Race Week hosted by California Yacht Club (CYC) in Marina del Rey was the third stop on the 2012 Farr 40 West Coast Championship schedule.  CYC out did themselves again this year with a great job of on the water race management and off the water dockside complementary beer and bountiful appetizers both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, June 2 –

Race #1 was 7-10 knots of wind with small swells.  At the first weather mark, Viva La Vida was first, Dark Star second, JoAnn third.  At the second weather mark, Viva La Vida first, JoAnn second, with Dark Star third.  At the finish line, JoAnn took first, Viva La Vida second and Dark Star third, Skian Dhu fourth, MAKO fifth, Foil (sporting their new stylish team shirts) sixth, White Knight seventh, and Temptress eighth.

Race #2 showed little change in the wind.  At the first weather mark, Viva La Vida was first, MAKO second, JoAnn third, Dark Star fourth.  The second weather mark, Viva La Vida still first but JoAnn second, MAKO third and Dark Star fourth.  At the finish line, Dark Star showed their usual perseverance and pulled out a first by passing the other three boats.  After leading the fleet, Viva La Vida took second, JoAnn third, Skian Dhu fourth, White Knight fifth, Temptress sixth, MAKO seventh and Foil eighth.

Race #3 had the wind picking up to 8-11 knots.  JoAnn felt the change in the wind pressure and decided to change to her medium jib which was a big mistake.  At the finish line, Dark Star was first, Skian Dhu second, Temptress third, Viva La Vida fourth, MAKO fifth, Foil sixth, JoAnn seventh and, with a wet and torn kite, White Knight eighth.

Upon arrival back in the marina, the racers were met with cold beer on the dock, CYC style.  After the scores were tabulated, 1st place Dark Star with a three (3) point lead over Viva La Vida in 2nd, and one (1) point separated Skian Dhu and JoAnn for 3rd and 4th places.

Sunday, June 3 –

Race #4 had Viva La Vida showing the Farr 40 Fleet their hard work and practice was paying off by finishing first with JoAnn second, Dark Star settling for third, White Knight fourth, MAKO fifth, Skian Dhu sixth, Foil seventh, and Temptress eighth.  Dark Star only had a one point lead over Viva La Vida which setup a showdown between the two boats for overall first place to be settled in Race 5.

Race #5 showdown started with Dark Star and Viva La Vita not just entertaining the racers but also the Race Committee with both of their match racing skills.  In prestart, they circled for an advantage at the start.  All said and done, Viva La Vida finished first, Dark Star second, MAKO third, White Knight fourth, Skian Dhu fifth, JoAnn sixth, Temptress seventh and Foil eighth.

Both JoAnn and MAKO improved their Hi-Point Championship Standings by finishing 3rd and 5th, respectively.

This regatta showed the Farr 40 West Coast Fleet at its best.  There were no protests filed, high Corinthian fellowship between boats was observed, and a strong sense of sharing information at the docks both days by all.  How does it get any better than this?  Next stop – Long Beach Race Week (June 22 – 24, 2012).
