The 2013 Cal Cup will likely go down as one of, if not THE most competitive events in the history of the Farr 40 West Coast Fleet. Cal Yacht Club provided an excellent shore side venue with all 8 Farr 40s tied up on “Cal Cup Row”. Excellent race management was led by PRO Tom O’Conor and the weather cooperated both days with typical 8-10 knot MDR conditions.

Skian Dhu led off the regatta with what appeared to be a race win but on the last half of the run, Viva la Vida engaged them in some match racing tactics. Well behind in 3rd, Dark Star took advantage and closed the gap. At the finish, VLV finished first by 1 second, ahead of DS with SD another second behind. All 3 boats within 2 meters at the finish.

Race 2 had JoAnn setting up in their often used right side position and sailed away to a large lead. SD, DS and Temptress all fought hard for the next places with VLV in 5th.

Race 3 had Temptress showing exceptional speed sailing away to a race win with DS 2nd, VLV 3rd and JA in 4th. SD suffered a tough race after going 3-2 to start the regatta.

Saturday evening found a virtual 4-way tie with DS on 8 points, VLV, JA and Temptress on 9 points with SD in 5th on 12 points. New class member Mick Schlens improved throughout the day with Foil and White Knight in the final 2 spots.

Sunday’s breeze filled in by start time and the fleet was off on time. Regatta leader Dark Star emerged from the first beat with a small lead and rounded the mark in 1st. In the defining moment of the regatta, a terrible spinnaker wrap allowed several boats to sail by. Viva la Vida seized the opportunity to take the lead in the race and cover to the finish to enter the last race with a 2 point lead.

Race 5 got off with a clean start, save Skian Dhu who were over early. JoAnn went right off the line pressing into a big right shift and emerged from the right side with a large lead, never to be challenged. Viva la Vida led the fleet on the left and sailed a conservative race, only needing a 2nd to secure victory. White Knight had their best race of the weekend, a 3rd, just nipping Dark Star to push them back to 4th overall.

Jeff Shew/Bill Durant’s Viva la Vida sailed to a convincing win representing Long Beach Yacht Club. As a result, they are now tied on points with Dark Star for the 2013 High Point Championship, with JoAnn only 1 point behind. Next stop on the 2013 circuit is Long Beach Race Week. The competition should be intense.
