The second weekend of April was a tough one for the Southern California Farr 40 fleet. Colder then normal, light winds were the recipe for the regatta sailed on the tricky Santa Monica Bay. With 8 boats entered, there was plenty of action and lead changes. Day one was postponed for a short time while the fleet waited for the wind to fill in. They soon wondered if they should have waited slightly longer as the wind glassed off after the first start causing doubts as to whether the fleet would even get around the first mark. Temptress finally made it around the weather mark first followed by Dark Star and Viva La Vida and JoAnn. By the finish it was Dark Star followed by Tempress, Joann, and Viva La Vida. While the next two races of they day were also light, it was a little more consistent. Race two was won by Temptress who was sailing fast in the challenging conditions. Viva la Vida was second followed by Dark Star with Farr Niente close behind. Farr Niente was being chartered by Mick Shlens. It was Mick’s first Farr 40 event and we look forward to seeing more of Mick in the near future. Race three was won by Dark Star followed by JoAnn, Viva La Vida and Skian Dhu.

The fleet was fortunate enough to have a little more wind on Sunday but it was just as tricky. Race 4 was won by Dark Star followed by Far Niente, Viva La Vida, and Skain Dhu. With one race to go, Dark Star has a comfortable gap but it wasn’t easy behind here. Viva La Vida sat at 12 points with Joann and Temptress tied at 17. Far Niente was at 20 with Skain Dhu one point behind at 21. With Foil at 25 and White Knight at 27, there were still spots to move up the leader board. Joann sailed a perfect race finishing first which moved them from 4th to 2nd. Finishing second in the final race was Skain Dhu followed by Dark Star and Foil.

When the dust settled, the regatta was won by Jeff Janov and his team aboard Dark Star from California Yacht Club. Stephen Murphy and his team on JoAnn from Seal Beach Yacht Club sped in to take second place. The podium was rounded out with Jeff Shew and Bill Durant and their team from Viva La Vida from Long Beach Yacht Club in third. Next up for the Farr 40 fleet is Yachting Cup in San Diego.
